France is the first country to have legally recognised local currencies as a means of payment by the law of 31 July 2014 on the social and solidarity economy (SSE). This law recognises additional local currencies as a means of payment, provided they are initiated by structures belonging to the SSE. These local currencies thus serve projects that respect the environment, equity, fair trade, or the fight against exclusion.
